New clients

Becoming a client takes one call and one check.

One call sets the scope and the price. One short online check confirms who you are, then we start.

What happens

Four steps from first call to work starting.

You can do the check on your phone. Everything else happens by phone or email.

  1. We talk

You tell us about your business and what you need. Call, email or WhatsApp, whichever suits you.

  2. You get the scope and price

We send the scope (what the job covers) and the price in writing. Nothing starts until you say yes.

  3. You do a short online identity check

We send you a secure link. You upload your ID there. For most people it is quick.

  4. Work starts

We open your file and get going. You get a copy of everything we lodge.

The check

Why we check your identity.

Two sets of rules ask us to do this. Tax agent rules say we must confirm who every client is. Anti-money-laundering rules also apply when we set up a company, trust or super fund.

As a registered tax agent we must confirm who you are before we lodge for you. That rule comes from the Tax Practitioners Board and applies to every client.

A second set of rules covers money laundering (hiding money that comes from crime). They are the AML/CTF rules (anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing), run by a government agency called AUSTRAC. Since 1 July 2026 they cover some accounting work, including setting up companies, trusts and self-managed super funds.

So we confirm who you are before we act for you. For a company or trust, we also check the people who own or control it. We keep these records for seven years, as the rules require.

For most people the check is short and done on a phone. Sometimes we need more documents, and we tell you if so. We never ask for bank passwords.

We also check names against sanctions lists, and against lists of people in senior public roles and their close family. We keep watching those lists while you are our client. Where the law requires it, we report to AUSTRAC.

If you are setting up a new company or trust, we check each director and trustee at the same time.

Before the check

What to have ready.

Have these near you when the link arrives. The check then takes one sitting.

  • A driver licence or passport. It must be current, not expired.
  • For a company, the full name and date of birth of each director. We need the same for anyone who owns 25% or more, or who controls the company another way.
  • For a trust, the trust deed (the document that sets up the trust). We also need the names of the settlor (who set it up), the trustee (who runs it), the appointor (who can replace the trustee) and the beneficiaries (who can receive money from it).
  • Your ABN (Australian Business Number) if you have one.
  • Please do not send your ID or tax file number by WhatsApp or ordinary email. Use the secure link we send you.

Start

Do the check when you are ready.

The link comes from Annature, the service we use for identity checks. We tell you on the call when to expect it. If you are not sure an email is really from us, call 1800 METTLE first. We answer Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00.

The online identity check

We email you the secure link after our first call.

The check runs on a secure third-party service. This website never stores your documents. See our privacy policy for how we handle your details.
